Find Your Forte is a program in Surrey that provides free music education to children in the foster care system. We host beginner and intermediate piano lessons every Saturday at Fleetwood Christian Reformed Church.

Our Story

Find Your Forte initially started as a discussion between Merissa Li and Jamie Yin about their shared passion for playing and teaching piano. After much brainstorming and planning, it blossomed into a program reaching out to the community in Surrey.

Since childhood, we have been fortunate enough to receive quality music education, and because it has had such a positive impact on our lives, we would like to give back to our community. This idea has been sitting in the back of our minds individually for years, but only recently transformed into reality by working in collaboration with one another.

Our Mission

We picture a community where each child has access to quality music education and the opportunity to develop their minds through the gift of music, therefore helping to form a stronger, more connected, and more creative world.

There are countless children in the foster care system who do not have access to quality music education. Research has repeatedly shown that music education provides a plethora of benefits in a child’s development, facilitating learning in other subjects and enhancing skills in many other areas. Not only that, music is also an enjoyable skill to possess and can be used for many opportunities in one’s lifetime.

At Find Your Forte, we strive to provide a stable environment where children feel comfortable and are able to develop their musical skills and understanding. We aim to accomplish this goal through piano lessons on a weekly basis, forming a reliable foundation for children in care. We strongly believe that music education should always be accessible and that every child deserves the opportunity to learn something that can be so beneficial for themselves and to those around them.
